One line really stayed with me from Kris’ email about his partnership with Colin: “I like to think we have each other’s backs.”
Yes! When your person in this world has your back—without reservation, without conditions—you’ve found love.
Kris and Colin met in an English class at the University of Alberta. At the time, Kris identified as a woman. It was a fast love. The know-it-when-you-find-it kind. And they were engaged five months later. Fast-forward six years: Kris and Colin exchanged vows in front of friends and family in a small ceremony in Grand Prairie. Then they spent the first few years of their marriage nestled together in love.
For Kris though—despite being happy in marriage—he explained to me that something was nagging. And that nagging thing was something personal. He came across a post online about trans people, and then started looking into things more. He told me that he went down the Internet rabbit-hole and made some realizations: that nagging thing was that he was trans. Kris was terrified to tell Colin. But, because of their know-it-when-you-find-it, love-without-reservation love, Colin said he loved Kris for Kris, not for Kris’ gender. Yes! Yes! Yes!
Imagine a world where all of us just have each other’s backs. Imagine the transformative potential of breaking down those boundaries? Moving beyond the borders that separate us, and sometimes even prevent us from getting to know others that live a lifestyle that may not mirror our own? I love the stories that cross these arbitrary lines.
I think we can sometimes shy away from talking about things we may not be super familiar with or have personal experience with, but I think it’s important that if we are an ally, we say so, and show up when we can. So, when Kris asked if I could do a couple’s session with Kris as Kris—with his true self reflected in the images—it was a whole-hearted heck yes from me! I love non-traditional, non-normative love stories.
And, not only am I always game, but I am also always honored to be trusted with these stories.
