I
edmonton newborn photographer

I used to shy away from family and newborn sessions. But, I came to the realization that these sessions are moments of storytelling—just like a wedding day. I am a collector of stories and a documenter of connections, which is perhaps why I am so at home with photography. This move into family work happened naturally. Oftentimes, my family sessions are with clients whose weddings I documented. How amazing is it that I am able to to witness and record another milestone? Finding the perfect newborn photographer for you will come down to your preference of style.

For these family and newborn sessions, I tend to document my clients in their own home. People are connected to their spaces, and often a home reflects aspects of that family. I love incorporating those details into the session. We decorate our homes with pieces of our hearts and being welcomed into a space—especially during this time—is an honour.

My style

Through my experience as a wedding photographer, I have honed a photojournalistic style that carries over to newborn sessions. I look for and document the story of this important new chapter in my clients’ lives. My approach is to capture babies and parents relaxed and being themselves in their own environment. This results in authentic images with a sense of movement and joy. This style is different from what some people might expect from newborn photos. I won’t put your baby in a basket or place them on a vintage buggy or use props. What I will do is focus on you and your new family member in your own home. I’ll capture his or her nursery and your baby in your arms. I’ll find the soft moments that are a beautiful part of this new stage of your lives. Snuggles and naps. My favourite!

When to book the session

Take some time to consider if you’d prefer fresh newborn photographs or if you’d prefer your little one to be a bit older: it’s really up to you! One way to make the decision is to consider what, years later, will be most important to you to look back on. Booking sessions 3 months in advance is suggested. If you choose to add a maternity session to your newborn session, we like to do those before 7 months.

If you’d like to capture the newborn stage, we can tentatively book a session and then adjust according to their actual birthdate. In the first few weeks, babies sleep a lot. A sleepy baby is extra snuggly and will allow us to take our time during the photoshoot and capture your newborn as they are before they start to grow and change. Sleepy newborns are easy to position – so we will have a little bit more control over the direction of the photoshoot.

If you’d like to wait a few months until your baby gains some of their more distinct features, we can book a 2/3-month session instead. By this time, you may feel more rested and ready for pictures, too. Of course, a wiggly 3-month old will assert themselves a little bit more, so we will adjust according to their behaviour and your little one will be more camera aware than in the fresh newborn sessions. Babies won’t sleep as easily so we might not get them to, instead, we will capture their new forming personalities and that’s pretty magical too.

While you may be counting your sleep by the minutes and not the hours, and things may feel a bit fuzzy, these images will clearly reflect your family and be a keepsake to continue to look back on years from now, whichever session you choose.
